Tunable Color Temperature Fixtures

New product requests and discussion. The Highly Modular Microgrid Platform supports hundreds of products. Many will be developed by LumenCache Labs but we will often recommend another developer take the reigns on a product they are ideally suited for. Tunable Color Temperature Fixtures

Post by DB »

For a project in Raleigh, NC - four 3000 sqft passive houses - we are looking for tunable color temperature led fixtures that are compatible with lumencache or can be made compatible in the immediate future. Two products of interests are from Juno lighting - the Juno Trac 12 Warmdim system (http://www.junolightinggroup.com/attach ... 3_2_16.pdf) and Aculux (http://www.junolightinggroup.com/attach ... 1_16_1.pdf). The Trac 12 system runs on an input voltage of 12V AC, but not does list the output voltage on their data sheets. Could anyone from lumencache help understand whether these systems could be amenable to lumencache? I've reached out to Juno lighting and the tech support I was directed to didn't seem to have even a basic understanding of how LED lighting works and I'm waiting to hear back from a lighting specialist with a local company which sells the product.

I agree with the lack of understanding by tech support but remember, the staff at the Apple genius bar doesn't know how the iPhone is made, just how to use it properly as designed. You're essentially asking the Apple genius bar guy to tell you how the Huawei VR camera works :-)

The Juno light you reference is a good fixture. It works by having a complex 2 channel AC driver that either adjusts the ratio of warm to cool in 2 arrays. The LED chip could be from a variety of sources. Bridgelux and Sharp have several good models that would be likely candidates for top brand COB chips with multiple arrays.

Several of the new LumenCache light models for 2017 have 2 arrays and support tunable color temperature like the Juno fixture assembly. The difference is, these lights work with low cost 1 channel drivers today so builders can install a great looking basic lighting package for low cost. Then the magic happens. The homeowner can simply insert a 2 channel card in the closet and the light becomes color tuning.

As the mechanical design on the Juno light is excellent I'll try to contact Juno and see if we can get a LumenCache version of their lights going by 2017. I suspect we'll get many requests on how to partner as we roll out the gen2 products this year and we generate some industry news.

In lieu of a more lengthy diatribe on the necessity of warm dimming LEDs to gaining larger market share, I would like to just say that I hope that tunable white and warm dimming fixtures are a top priority for the gen2 release. LED lightings greatest shortfall, in my opinion, has been the lack of a black body like dimming curve which provides the natural warm ambiance and color rendering of halogen or incandescent. In the realm of high end modern design in which I operate, that aesthetic/atmospheric quality cannot be compromised for the marginal efficiency of a system like lumencache. With more robust tunable white/warm dimming led options, lumencache would become our standard for 100% of our residential and commercial projects.

A few more excellent tunable white led products:

recessed: http://www.acuitybrands.com/products/de ... WH_pdf.pdf

Could these fixtures be powered and controlled through a lumencache system today? With Gen 2 release?

More or less looking for a YES or NO response.

Thanks

YES.

They are 2 separate circuits. Simply use 2 ports, 1 for each color. You can use with Amplifiers too.

RGB Lights with common plus(+) are not compatible at this time.

For the Gotham EVO light would you need to use 2 300ma boost drivers since each light draws 20W? So each light would take 2 rj45 ports and 2 boost drivers?

Until we have 40-60W driver modules released, yes. Gen2 first releases will include this 1Q18.

We tested 5 remote driver contractor grade fixtures from Lowes and Home Depot. All worked perfectly with LumenCache after cutting off the AC driver and connecting a SIB. This included two tunable white fixtures. They have the little selector switch (see photo--btw, not my fingernails) so yuo select the color during installation to match the other fixtures in the ceiling. When we release the tunable SIB and L3- drivers you can adjust dynamically. The wiring stays the same.
